Some Examples of Torch Bearers:
Patricia Duffy
Hometown: Bathurst
Carrying Torch: Beresford
Patricia Duffy’s father once told her that she could do anything, that she could change the world. She knows now that she is making a difference by assisting with today’s environmental crisis. She is one of 275 Canadian Climate Messengers spreading the word of climate change.
For seven years, Duffy was Bathurst City Councillor and was passionate about the environment and environmental issues. She believes that everyone has a role to play and it is possible to change things one person at a time. She encourages everyone to share their stories so we can find new ways to incorporate environmentally conscious living into our lives.
Jaclyn MacMillan
Hometown: Arthurette
Carrying Torch: Grand Sault/Grand Falls
Throughout her life, Jaclyn MacMillan has lived active. She is involved in many sports and martial arts. This year, she received a red sash in Kung Fu and the ‘first princess of Perth Andover’ award. With these titles and her many volunteer hours with children, she hopes she can inspire more youth to get active.
Growing up, she adopted an active lifestyle from her father who has a black sash in Kung Fu. He inspired her to believe in herself and embody the spirit of an athlete. Without his guidance, she would not be the healthy, active person she is today.
MacMillan feels the gratification of success through hard work, it reminds her that she is strong, she is an athlete and she inspires.
Gordon Pitre
Hometown: Bathurst
Carrying Torch: Campbellton
Gordon Pitre has been involved in the Special Olympics for 25 years after becoming interested because of his intellectually challenged son. In 2007, he was the chairperson for the winter games held in Bathurst with over 200 athletes and 300 volunteers. Presently he is the head coach of the snow shoeing and track and field team.
Pitre has also been involved in Beavers for over 25 years and has coached minor hockey and baseball for over 15 years. Additionally, Pitre is a 12 year member of United Commercial Travellers Council 827, whose main focus is the intellectually disabled, Special Olympics, cure for cancer fundraising, and youth drug prevention and community building
